The Scent of Christmas, or What Winter Smells Like

It’s slowly getting cold. Here and there, autumn is still painting a little red into the trees, but otherwise the world is already set to winter. And when the November mist drifts across the meadows in the morning, you’d swear you could already smell it: snow. Of course you can’t, because water - whether liquid, gas or frozen - smells of nothing at all. Yet the olfactory experience in winter is different in general. So can you smell winter after all?

A chilly little nose

Even science isn’t quite sure what it is we think we can sniff in snow. Still, it has two explanations to hand. Fresh snow is preceded by very particular weather phenomena: changes in air pressure, temperature and humidity. Our perception may store this special combination of meteorological heralds in the subconscious and then automatically link it with the snow to come. Or else: scents struggle to unfold in the cold, and nature and the plant world are largely in hibernation too. The nose then probably interprets this general drop in scent molecules in the air we breathe as wintry. So it doesn’t actually smell of snow, says research. But it does smell of Christmas, says Aromea - see fragrance oil 401: Christmas.

Jingle Smells

Perhaps it’s precisely because fewer scent particles are buzzing about in cold air that we can pick up Christmassy aromas more clearly in winter. Our nose is simply less distracted, so to speak, and duly files open fires, Advent baking and autumn fruit under winter. At Christmas markets, too, with their jumble of crowds, it’s best to follow your nose: candle makers, frankincense hut, chestnut kettle, a kitchen frying kiachl (Tyrolean fried dough), baked apples and candied nuts, and to wash it down, mulled wine or punch? Scent marketing deluxe, of course, as contemplative as it is irresistible. And you’re happy to treat yourself to an impulse buy for a little Christmas spirit at home. Popular examples: fragrance oil (fir), a beeswax candle or frankincense. Three pilgrims were already hauling that (along with fragrant myrrh) to the Christian crib way back when. Probably because, away from the aromatic Advent markets, the festive spirit is often slow to arrive - especially when the snow is keeping us waiting yet again.

A noseful of Christmas

These days, there’s no more need for pilgrimages. Neither to the Christkindl market nor to your trusted local frankincense dealer. Because there’s a thoroughly modern, fragrant way to outfox the seasonal madness of decorating and Christmas in general. It comes as a fragrant Christmas special from Aromea (for example: fragrance oil 403, Spekulatius or fragrance oil 1068, Mulled Spices) - for instance in the stylish Aroma Cube. On the outside, pure aesthetics in timeless black; on the inside, patented AirQ technology. It diffuses your favourite fragrance whisper-quiet and smoke-free at nano level (50 times finer than conventional aerosol sprays). A fine breath of Christmas, with festive notes of green fir, spicy cinnamon, velvety vanilla, fresh orange, baked apple and steaming mulled wine. With its AirQ nebuliser, Aromea’s compact Christmas cube creates homogeneous scent spaces of up to 280 m³. And thanks to its handy design, the sleek Aromea Cube (13.5×13.5×15.2 cm) can be used wherever you like, by the way - Christmas to go, so to speak. A word about wish lists: this one is absolutely gift-worthy.

Every year, all over again

Meanwhile, that fleeting Christmas flair for the office, lobby or sales floor comes courtesy of a powerful aroma tower or a nano diffuser with patented AirQ technology - depending on the diffuser, even more expansive premises can be put in the olfactory mood. Smoky wood, cool forest and fresh, slightly watery notes: a snowy walk in the woods. You breathe in that wintry freshness deeply while Christmas shopping, and end up buying the pretty coat after all. The hotel smells exquisitely of cigars, cognac and crackling open fires, so you’re happy to stay a little longer. Corporate Scent meets Christmas in the office too: notes of orange, frankincense and Swiss stone pine motivate and calm (tip: fragrance oil 075 - Mandarin. Or: fragrance oil 318 with Swiss stone pine and cedarwood). And suddenly you even find yourself quietly singing along to “Last Christmas”. Outside, it’s turned cold. You can clearly smell winter. Every year, all over again.

With wintry scent specials from Aromea, you can easily bring the scent of Christmas home as well.
