The nose is a fascinating thing. How scents and our perception of them affect us is not only highly interesting from a scientific point of view. Our emotions are closely linked to the perception of scent too. Perhaps that’s exactly why the Austrian science magazine programme QUANTENSPRUNG recently devoted an entire episode to the subject. Because there are plenty of questions about the nose: How do we perceive scents? What do they do to our brain? Why do we find the smell of flowers or a damp summer forest pleasant, and that of a dung heap disgusting? The documentary seeks and finds fascinating answers and puts the nose in the spotlight, where it so richly deserves to be. Also interviewed in the programme of 10 April on ORF, Austria’s public broadcaster, is the German biologist and physician Hanns Hatt - he’s regarded as the leading authority on scents and the perception of scent! Exciting and well worth watching - but be quick, because the programme won’t be online for long - just click “Play” below!
