Hotel Scenting: The Sensual Side of Freedom

A moment of triumph ends with a deep breath. When the hiker conquers the summit, the seafarer reaches a safe harbour or a long working day finally reaches its well-earned close, you breathe a sigh of relief. You close your eyes, take a really deep breath and treat yourself to a smile. Freedom tastes great. And yet it smells different every time. Pine needles high in the fresh air, salty sea breezes out on the water or a soothing, relaxing bath at home. A fine scent note switches your head to holiday mode.

That, of course, has long since stopped being a secret. Aromacology is the very old science of the fine nose. Even in antiquity, people created a sweet-smelling atmosphere with incense, though in those days it was reserved for the temples of the gods and wealthy rulers. Today, the nose has also proved its soothing and healing effect in aromatherapy. Applied and alternative medicine make such effective use of our organ of smell because it has a direct line to the brain. The limbic system (responsible for emotion and memory) is the oldest part of the human data centre, and it processes the olfactory input from the nose emotionally, with no detours. That’s why we associate smells with strong feelings. A bakery, a meadow in bloom, a summit conquered: the right smell makes the right pictures.

Painting for the nose.

The perfumer is the painter of scents, using fine notes to conduct the nose towards the right impressions. That’s why Catherine de’ Medici brought the art of perfumery to the French court in the 16th century. Perhaps also because in feudal France at the time it was rather unusual to wash. A true paradise for perfumers and, in every respect, an interesting experience for the nose. Today, however, the true masters of nasal nuance are hotels. On holiday, you let yourself go. And anyone using the fine art of scenting here is bedding their guests down on invisible clouds. Clouds of scent, that is, from the welcome scent in the lobby to the essential oil in the steam bath. Even the entrance takes the nose by the hand and whisks the imagination away with it. Follow your nose? A (holiday) experience for all the senses starts right here. The magic formula for scent success: Aromea.

Scent space.

Inside the word atmosphere is the Greek “atmós (ατμός)”, meaning steam, haze or breath. So what we generally understand as the overall impression of a space builds a bridge to the nose in the word stem itself. And from word stem to brain stem, it’s just one breath to awaken associations. That’s why the atmosphere at the Italian place round the corner already begins out on the street, with the sounds of Italy and the unmistakable scent of the charcoal stone oven, long before you bite into your first slice of pizza. The holistic experience turns it into a short break for all the senses.

For longer-term rest and recuperation, though, a hotel holiday is sometimes to be preferred to the Italian round the corner. Here too, guests are welcomed with open arms, and every effort is made to perfect that special experience down to the last detail. Here too, sensory depth is in the air: in the aroma. Multifaceted flair in the lobby: luxurious leather, fine woods such as spruce and cedar, floral freshness from rose and orange blossom. Your holiday begins with the very first step: breathe out and switch off. The associative way we perceive scent makes itself felt both mentally and physically: with lavender you dream better in your hotel bed, while citrus and eucalyptus boost circulation and concentration in conference rooms. Crisp forest notes and floral scents provide that special relaxation in the wellness area, and marine freshness gets you going in the gym. At the breakfast buffet, baked goods, chocolate and ground coffee mingle, orange peel hangs in the air, and is that a hint of fried bacon? With Aromea, the nose goes on a journey of the imagination, even when the chef is on a break.

Scent makers.

But where does it come from, this fine smell? A symphony of impressions, yet the orchestra is invisible. Almost. Stylishly and subtly, Aromea leaves the stage to the scent: its attractive applicators mist and vaporise out of sight. The plain aroma towers Aromea No.1 & No.2 stand inconspicuously on the sidelines and put the experience in the spotlight with plenty of power: large spaces, no problem. For a small but effective scent experience, there’s the compact Aromea Pro, with straightforward wall mounting included. As an aesthetic eye-catcher, the attractive Aromea Cube has no need to hide either: at the bar, in the conference room or even in the hotel room, it impresses with whisper-quiet and surprisingly powerful performance. The contents of a 500 ml individual Aromea fragrance cartridge will serve a room of 120 m² for a full four months, at eight hours a day. Pretty impressive? Just as good scent marketing should be. You take a deep breath and catch yourself smiling: leisure tastes great too.
