We all know the feeling. The sun’s rays tickle the tip of your nose, there’s a whiff of sun cream and every so often a hint of coconut. Even in our part of the world. If only it weren’t for the rubbish bin. And if only a dog hadn’t peed on that rock. AROMEA Airdesign can’t solve the rubbish problem, nor can it stop the dog from doing its business. But with its new GENIE fragrance collection, AROMEA can fight these smells so effectively that the air smells not only of coconut, but of grapefruit or lime as well.
He, she, it: the culprit.
Scents with positive associations make a room feel cosy, inviting and relaxing. But if it stinks in the very place that’s supposed to be relaxing you, the effect flips: you feel uneasy, no longer safe and sheltered, and may even sense a danger to your health. And you wouldn’t be so far wrong: bad smells and the pollutants that come with them can trigger coughing and watery, burning eyes. Eventually, the stench takes its toll on the mind too: those affected can feel more stressed and may, in some circumstances, develop sleep disorders and anxiety.
Odorants are chemical compounds that stimulate the sense of smell and trigger the perception of odour. A great many odorants are organic compounds, such as aliphatic, aromatic or halogenated hydrocarbons, as well as compounds containing oxygen, sulphur and nitrogen. Strong-smelling substances also include inorganic ones such as hydrogen sulphide and ammonia. We find a lot of this unpleasant: the organic waste, the public toilet, the smell from pipes or the manhole cover… or the brewery next door. Especially in summer, when rot and fermentation are joined by thermal decomposition thanks to the high temperatures.
Incidentally, in the Middle Ages people simply tipped their waste into the street, but as cities grew, the stench became so unbearable that the city lords had to find a solution. So they introduced rules requiring residents to empty their waste into bins, so that it could be spread on the fields outside the city gates. We can therefore count it as great progress that these days it’s only the bin that stinks and not everything else as well!

Fighting trash with Genie!
In its Genie collection, AROMEA has two very special fragrances with patented technology, developed specifically to neutralise the smell of waste or rubbish bins. The Genie Trash fragrance comes as “Sparkling Lime” or “Grapefruit Fresh”. The Genie collection was tested accordingly beforehand, being used under a variety of conditions. The study found that all the fragrances significantly reduce foul odours in every situation. Under suitably optimal conditions, nothing at all smells the way it shouldn’t. This patented technology is based on two stages. And because it’s always better to nip the problem - or the stench - in the bud, the first step of the three-stage technology is prevention. It focuses on bacterial and enzymatic processes, because things can only start to stink once bacteria are at work. And to stop them from getting involved in the first place, they are destroyed right away by the corresponding molecules in the fragrance cartridges. The second step: elimination and neutralisation. Once chemically and once physically - so that everything really is gone.

Do it yourself.
When you need a quick fix, you reach for tried-and-tested home remedies: you set out a bowl of boiled vinegar water, tuck lavender sachets into the wardrobes, vacuum up coffee when the hoover stinks, or pour baking powder into musty trainers. Food scraps, grease and other deposits also cause unpleasant smells in drains, especially in summer. This is where bicarbonate of soda helps. Pour four teaspoons down the drain and follow with half a cup of vinegar or vinegar essence. Lay a damp cloth over it and leave the mixture to work for ten minutes. Finally, pour in about a litre of hot water. As well as getting rid of the smell, this method also helps with blocked drains.
Oh yes: lighting a match or two in the toilet really does help. The burnt sulphur covers the smell and so perfumes it.
