For the Love of Wood: Scent Marketing at Floor Trade

“I glaub, i steh auf di”: “I think I’m into you”, in Austrian dialect. That’s Andreas Gabalier’s declaration of love to his “Engal”, his little angel, for whom he “sings a Liad”, a song. Think of him what you will, but at least as beautiful is Reinhard Pascher’s declaration of love to … wood. The owner of the Swiss company Floor Trade AG has devoted a whole showroom to it. Because his high-quality wooden floors are what warm managing director Reinhard Pascher’s heart. As a dealer and importer, he will soon be celebrating the 16th anniversary of Floor Trade. High-quality floor coverings: he still goes weak at the knees for them. His exhibition of all kinds of floor coverings at the Holiday Inn hotel in the small Swiss town of Schindellegi: that’s what makes his heart beat faster. And the cherry on top? Scent marketing from AROMEA: efficient, worry-free, hypoallergenic and with patented AirQ technology. He gave us a little insight…

Question: In your showroom you work with all the senses, and the wood already puts a special scent in the air. So why did you still opt for AROMEA scent marketing? What added value does it bring to your customers’ buying experience?

Pascher: When that much wood comes together, there’s always a very special scent in the air, and of course that’s the case with us too! Wooden floors also give off a very particular aura. So we wanted what you smell to match that without compromise, to fit into the overall experience and round it off.
There was one small problem, though, and that was THE deciding factor in why we turned to AROMEA scent marketing. The exhibition is located in the “Holiday Inn” hotel in Schindellegi, Switzerland. The hotel’s controlled ventilation, however, also brought us unwelcome smells that didn’t suit our wood at all. With the help of AROMEA Airdesign, we were able to neutralise these unpleasant odours optimally and without any trouble. That keeps the air fresh and creates a great scent experience at the same time.

Question: You chose the “Nano Pro 5” diffuser with AirQ technology. Why this diffuser in particular?

Pascher: After a detailed consultation with Peter Wieser of AROMEA, we finally settled on the Pro 5 nano diffuser. It’s built directly into the ventilation, virtually invisible, which is perfect for our purposes and the size of the room. You don’t really notice anything, and yet the programmable diffuser scents the whole room. Exactly what we were looking for!

Question: What mattered to you when choosing the fragrance? What did you look out for?

Pascher: Wood has a wonderful smell in itself. So it was very important to us that the fragrance should perfectly match the natural smell of each wood. That makes for a coherent overall picture, and together with AROMEA we pulled it off superbly! Peter Wieser advised us very professionally and helped us make the right choice of fragrance. As a result, unpleasant odours are neutralised and a great new scent experience is created. And the elegant fragrance shows off our products to even better effect. What more could you want?

Question: How much of a role does scent play when buying a floor? Do customers actually look for particular wood scents?

Pascher: The scent surrounding a customer when they buy a floor plays a big part! When the surroundings of our high-quality wood products smell good and the customer takes to them, when the place passes the sniff test, so to speak, they immediately feel much more comfortable. The overall picture has to be right, and with AROMEA scent marketing we’ve achieved that.
